Teachers and Parents
YEAR 1 WINNERS AND FINALISTS HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED.
THE YEAR 2 COMPETITION HAS BEGUN.
EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES FOR YEAR 1 ARE STILL AVAILABLE!
Thanks for your interest in Pulse of the Planet’s Kids’ Science Challenge. We hope that your students and children found it to be a rich and rewarding science education experience. We sincerely believe that adult participation in the learning experience is the single most important key to educational success. Your participation was truly appreciated.
In
a nutshell, we asked kids to propose an original question, problem or
experiment that relates to four fields of scientific inquiry or engineering:
flavor science, water quality, skateboard engineering, and the search for
life in outer space. The entries judged in each field to be the most
original won the Grand Prize for that field – a visit with
the scientist or engineer to work with them to solve the question or problem
proposed, along with possible appearances in Kids’ Science Challenge videos and Pulse
of the Planet radio programs. Additional Finalists were also selected
in each field. Click here to see the Grand Prize
winners and Finalists, or go to the Entries
Gallery for a selection
of other fun entries that were not selected by the judges.
We’ve created a wealth of educational resources and activities related to the four Scientific Fields. We encourage you to continue to use the following resources, and also encourage you to actively participate with your students to enhance their educational experience.
Kids’ Science Challenge Web Site
This web site is your central resource for educational activities. Although designed to be kid-friendly, we hope that you’ll have fun exploring it too!
On the
Archived Year 1 Flash site, the colored trapdoors at the bottom of the screen lead to comprehensive information about each of the four Scientific Fields. They pop-up to reveal three selections:
- Latest Updates:
- Videos of the scientists and engineers describing their work and how they do science.
- Bulletin Boards for the latest news, and discussions with kids and the scientists.
- Science Secrets:
- Meet Your Scientist includes biographical information about the scientists and hints for additional research – all designed to help jump-start ideas.
- Get Involved has additional activities, including downloadable science projects
- And fun educational Games!
Other archived Year 1 pages include the Year One
Winners page, Kids' Science Reporters Blog, Year One Prizes , Year One Entries Gallery, Year One Media Arcade, Year One Partners and Sponsors, Year One Project Credits, and Year One Science Fair Projects.
Fun Activities!
We’ve provided downloadable PDFs of science projects for each Scientific Field, as well as the instruction booklet from our physical Activity Kit. These are all available for science fair projects. Just go to the Fun Activities page for more information.
Lesson Plans
In collaboration with WVIZ/PBS ideastream we created lesson plans for K-12 classroom use for each of the Scientific Fields. The lesson plans are aligned to National Science Education Standards. They are free and available at: www.pulseplanet.com/educatorresources, but you must register to access them.
Whyville is an online virtual world created specifically for kids. At Whyville kids can visit the Kids’ Science Challenge Clubhouse, where they can explore science activities and chat live with other kids about their ideas. Parental permission is required by Whyville for a child to participate on their site. Whyville complies with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
